Abstract

The coating of abrasive grains for a tool for diamond-abrasive processing is one of the important factors influencing the change in its properties and increasing its stability. The article focuses mainly on modern publications related to the application of boron nitride (h-BN and c-BN) coatings on abrasive grains. The study of BN nucleation at the atomic scale can be useful for planning experiments on the production of h-BN films. Cerium abrasives have implemented a new function of superlubrication during polishing thanks to h-BN coating, preventing damage and achieving an ultra-smooth surface. The interfacial interaction between diamond and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is also considered. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that cubic boron nitride thin films consist of a mixture of c-BN and t-BN phases, with c-BN being the dominant phase. It is shown that reducing the modulation period is an effective way to improve the mechanical and tribological properties of the cBN/NCD multilayer composite coating. That is, developments in the direction of creating boron nitride coatings (h-BN and c-BN) on the surface of grinding powders of diamond grains are important and relevant for improving the operational characteristics of diamond grinding tools.
